Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
